THE DISCOURSE OF POWER: THE LANGUAGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Vicky Hartnack (FLUL, Portugal)

This study seeks to understand how scientific and technological discourse and the mind frames it constructs, have penetrated the discourse of the literate – and how this in turn has influenced the discourse of power as reflected not only in official documents but also in the media. Through the mediation of applied linguistics as a social and cultural tool, I shall be looking at the structure of the language (mainly international English which is used for conveying scientific and technological innovation to other cultures) by following a genre-based approach from a systemic-functional linguistic stance. It will allow me to perceive how basic language patterns have built barriers that exclude those who cannot fathom them. It will also show how certain scientific notions have been coined to become common parlance, subsequently changing people’s understanding of our reality and what is at stake.
