This program will be organised as an intensive introduction to the theory and practice of the Sydney School and its development of genre-based literacy programs. The course begins with an overview of the history of the school, followed by an introduction to genres of student writing and the curriculum genre designed to teach writing across sectors. It continues with a focus on genre relations, and approaches to genre in related traditions (EAP and New Rhetoric), especially in relation to academic genres. Focus then shifts to genre and disciplinarity, surveying recent work on knowledge structure, grammatical metaphor and differences between humanities, social science and science discourse. Attention is then given to close analysis of student/teacher classroom interaction followed up by an introduction to Reading to Learning programs designed to teach reading alongside writing. Finally the course explicitly addresses evaluation, introducing appraisal theory and periodicity, in relation to subjectivity and objectivity in academic writing.
